Introduction to Animation
In this introductory level of animation, you will be introduced to the various animation styles and techniques, both traditional and digital. You will learn to apply planning, idea development and storytelling techniques to create an effective animation.
What is Animation
Why Make Animation
Since animation's earliest beginnings it was clear that its strength was in bringing to life stories of the fantastic and the impossible. From prehistoric worlds to future civilizations animation allows storytellers to go anywhere their minds can take them. What was once only possible by the written and spoken word, animation brings those stories to life.
Animated storytelling has taken on many different roles in modern visual communication over the last 100 years. Cartoon, film, advertising, education, and art are the main uses of the magic of animated storytelling.

Traditional Animation Processes
There are many methods and styles of animation. Traditional methods are those that are not typically reliant on computers or other digital equipment.
Links will take you to examples of each style.
Animando, a short film produced by the National Film Board of Canada demonstrates and uses each of the above techniques (except rotoscopy). |

Modern Animation Process
Here are two examples that follow the process for 3D computer animation used by major production studios. You'll notice that the animation goes through several stages called passes. Each pass perfects a different area such as framing/blocking, primary action, secondary action, textures, and lighting.
