Short Film
DESCRIPTION
The goal of this project is to create an original short film employing the complete filmmaking
process from Pre-Production to Production and Post-Production. The filmmaker must write,
produce, direct and edit his or her own film, but may use as many other people for cast & crew
as needed. The most challenging aspect of this project is time management, therefore, it is
imperative that the filmmaker plans a project that fits his or her personal schedule and meets all
deadlines.
PROCESS
Pre–Production: Create a short film concept that focuses on a single protagonist. Tell your story
cinematically, story through images and sound, rather than dialogue or narration. Carefully
devise the images and montage for your film in a storyboard. This is the visual plan for the film.
Pitch your story and submit your script and storyboard on deadline before you shoot your film.
Production: Select reliable actors and interesting locations for your film. Shoot your film in as
few sessions as possible and do not forget to rehearse! Carefully plan where you are going to put
your camera and how you will light each shot. Follow your storyboards and avoid crossing the
line of action. Any camera movement must be motivated by the story. Use your knowledge of
design to frame every image as an individual work of art.
Post–Production: Ensure your picture is locked before you begin the Sound Design. Budget lots
of time for creating sound effects and music. Build your sound in layers. Colour correct film (or
convert to B&W and adjust brightness/contrast). Set the mood with opening titles and music or
sound. Make sure the film fades in – especially the sound. Add appropriate effects and
transitions. The closing credits should have music or sound that fades out at the end.
