Animation Project 2: Flash Animation

Create a 20-30 second character animation in Adobe Flash.

Guiding Questions:
  • What is animation?
  • What are the benefits to using animation over video?
  • What are the 12 principles of animation and how are they applied?
  • How does production differ between different animation styles?
  • How are filmmaking camera framing and motion achieved in animation?
  • What are  different ways to simulate motion in Flash?
  • What are the advantages of animating on computer vs traditional cel animation?
  • What are the limitations/drawbacks of 2D animation?


Process Steps:
  1. Watch animation instructional videos 
  2. Design your  original character(s)
  3. Create a story outline
  4. Draw out your action in storyboards
  5. Begin creating artwork in Flash
  6. Build layers and animate
  7. Export animation as JPEG Sequence
  8. Import Sequence to Final Cut
  9. (Bonus) Add sound effects and music in Soundtrack Pro

Project Requirements:
  • Complete character turn-around on the character design template.
  • Create a written outline of your short story.
  • Draw out storyboards.
  • Animation must be created in Adobe Flash.
  • Animation must have an original character.
  • Use different animating methods to create convincing motion.
  • Animation must be between 20-30 seconds at 24 fps (480-720).
  • Export animation as JPEG sequence to Final Cut Pro and export your movie in Quicktime format.
  • (Bonus) Add sound and music to your animation.
