Photo Portfolio

You will complete all of the black & white and colour photography assignments in the following categories:   

  • People
  • The Natural World 
  • The Human World
  • Art, Light & Motion
The assignments in each category are very broad, so it will be up to you to creatively interpret each subject and design compelling photographs.  You should make every effort to create as diverse and varied a portfolio as possible.  None of your subjects may be repeated.  You will likely take hundreds of photographs for your portfolio but only the best will be selected for submission.  It may help to record your ideas and interpretations of the various subjects in a journal or notebook.  Your final portfolio must contain 11 finished black and white photos and five colour photos. 


Assessment

Each assignment in this portfolio receives a mark out of 5 for a total of 80 marks.  Photographs are assessed according to exposure, focus, design and creativity.  Twenty percent is deducted from late projects.  Project marks may receive additional adjustments based on professionalism, effort and process.  All assignments are black and white photos that emphasize focus, exposure, design and creativity.  All photos are submitted in high quality JPEG format with complete metadata.

Black & White Photos

001  Youth Portrait: Photograph your friends and try to bring out their best qualities. 

002  Detail Portrait:  Photograph eyes, hands, feet, in action, etc.

003  Emotion / Story:  Capture an emotion or story in a photograph.

004  Creatures:  Photograph animals, pets, insects.  Try to say something about the creature or its environment.

005  Land / Sky:  Photograph landscapes and skyscapes, sunrises and sunsets, clouds, mountains and lakes, etc.

006  Water:  Photograph bodies of water, dripping water, fountains, ice, snow, rain, rivers, bottles and glasses, etc.

007  Transportation:  Photograph car parts, bicycles, planes, trains, etc.  Look for interesting angles and perspectives.

008  Silhouette:  Photograph objects with backlight.  Expose for the background and the subject will be silhouetted.

009  Reflection:  Photograph reflections in water, metal, mirrors...

010  Shadow:  Photograph a variety of shadows.  Distinct shapes are best.  Longer shadows in the golden hours.

011  Action:  Capture a sense of movement with a freeze frame, blur or panned photograph. 

Colour Photos

012  Plants/Flowers:  Photograph flowers, trees, gardens.  Get in close to capture textures and shapes

013  Texture:  Photograph as many different surfaces as you can.  Texture shows up well in hard light.

014  Human Mark:  Footprints, litter, suburbia, landfills, cave drawings...  Capture how humans have left their mark.

015  Food:  Photograph the things we eat like bread and vegetables, or the utensils we use to eat and cook

016  Clothes / Accessories:  Photograph the things we use and wear.
