How to create vertical text:
- Click and hold the Type tool icon and select "Vertical Type Tool".
How to adjust size and alignment of text:
- To re-size or rotate text, select the correct layer, then press CTRL+T to activate the Free Transform command. You could also go to Edit > Free Transform to do the same thing.
- In Free Transform mode, you can re-size text (or any selection, for that matter) by holding SHIFT (to preserve proportion) and clicking and dragging on one of the corner selection boxes.
Note: If you don't hold SHIFT, or if you use one of the side selection boxes, your text/image will "squish" and not keep its original proportion. Maybe that's what you want, but when it comes to image editing later on, you will not want to change the original proportions.
- You can press ESC to get out of Free Transform mode without saving changes. If you wish to keep your changes, press ENTER.
How to use the Warped Text tool:
- To create cool arc or other shape effects with your text, enter your text using the Type tool, then highlight it and Click on the Warped Text button in your top toolbar. This will open a menu with many options that can all be customized in a number of ways. Play around!

How to use Layer Styles (AKA Blending Options) to add dimension to your text
One of the best ways to make text "pop" is to add a Layer Style such as Drop Shadow, Bevel/Emboss, or Outer Glow.
- To Add a Layer Style, select the layer you wish to modify, then right-click and select "Blending Options" (the top choice). You can also left-double-click on the empty "gray space" right beside the title of the layer on the layer tab to open this menu.

- To specify which style to add, you want to click on the name of the effect, not on the box beside it. This is very counter-intuitive, but if you just click the box Photoshop will add a pre-made version of the effect and not let you customize it. Clicking on the name of the effect will open different options that let you customize the effect. You want to customize the effect.
- To make an effect more prominent, consider raising the opacity. To make an effect more "fuzzy", try raising the size but keeping the stroke low. For a more "firm" effect, do the opposite.

1) Write a list of ten words that you feel best describe you.
2) Open Photoshop, go to File > New, and set up your document like this:
3) This is now a one-page document. Select your background layer and fill it with a new colour that is not white (Edit > Fill, select "Color")
4) Use the Type tool to enter each word on a separate layer. (Choose a font for each word that you feel is a proper match).
5) Once each word is entered, go back and adjust the size, colour, placement, orientation (can use the vertical type tool too) so the whole document has a sense of cohesion. For Full Marks you must include the Text Mask tool and use an appropriate image to fill the text.
6) Go back again and use the warped text tool on at least 2 of the words.
7) Go back once more and add a layer style (e.g. Drop Shadow, Outer Glow, Bevel/Emboss) to at least 5 of the words.
8) When finished, go to File > Save As, and save your image as a .psd file (the default). This is so you can go back and edit your project later if you need.
9) Go back to File > Save As again, and this time save your image as a .jpg. THE JPG. FILE IS THE ONE YOU WILL NEED TO HAND IN.
